Schaeffer's Option Blog: Options Speculators Grow More Skeptical of American International Group, Inc. (AIG)

American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) attracted a posse of put traders on Wednesday, as the financial sector succumbed to widespread selling pressure. According to data from WhatsTrading.com, the security saw almost 11,500 puts change hands yesterday, nearly tripling its average single-session volume of fewer than 3,700 contracts. As a result of the bearish bombardment, the stock's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) jumped from 0.42 (in the 57th annual percentile) to 0.48 (in the 63rd annual percentile) overnight.

Digging deeper into yesterday's data, it appears that options players' expectations for AIG are substantially low. The most active option was the equity's July 1 put, which saw roughly 10,750 contracts cross the tape. At 10:16 a.m. Eastern, a block of 10,000 contracts traded for $0.03, between the bid and ask prices at the time.
