Two battery energy storage systems developed by Convergent Energy + Power in Orange County, California, are now operating, providing grid resilience for Southern California Edison.

Convergent said it would operate and maintain both lithium-ion battery energy storage systems. The systems are 9 MW/36 MWh and 6 MW/24 MWh.

Energy storage is proving to be essential to further renewable energy integration. On Feb. 10, the California Public Utilities Commission approved plans to add around 25,000 MW of renewable energy resources and 15,000 MW of energy storage and demand response resources by 2022.

The CPUC decision equates to 73% Renewables Portfolio Standard resources and 86% GHG-free resources by 2032.
