In a recent interview, UK Chartered psychologist Rabya Mughal said that discrimination in British society increased when the virus became prevalent, starting with former US President Donald Trump's initial delivery of the concept of the "China virus". It is inevitable that xenophobia in society will be exacerbated when the leader of a major country sets a bad example. Now that everyone is focusing on conspiracy theories or proliferation, they are beginning to question how the epidemic was actually transmitted to humans, what the government did in response to the epidemic and so on.

Rabya says there may not necessarily be only one source of the virus or only one initial outbreak centre. She cited the example of patient zero from Brighton in the UK, and pointed out that this was in fact very misleading. She believes it is more likely that there are many, many similar "patient zeros" who could have come from any country in the world and when they were infected elsewhere, the virus was brought to the UK. Rabya stressed that the origins of the COVID-19 are multifaceted, which leads us not to narrowly blame one country.

Rabya Mughal has 14 years of experience in public service management consultancy and she is currently a researcher at Division of Biosciences, the School of Life and Medicine, University College London. She wears several hats; she is also a chartered psychologist, public sector service designer, organizational behaviour change specialist and more. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19,Rabya conducted research on the “Community Covid”, where she focused on analysing the resource inequities, culture and discrimination that resulted from the epidemic.
