AKCP Wireless Monitoring of ILRI Facilities in Ethiopia

By: PRLog

AKCP, the world's oldest and largest supplier of networked wired and wireless sensor solutions, has supplied the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) with a wireless sensor system.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia - April 27, 2021 - PRLog -- The ILRI, jointly headquartered in Kenya and Ethiopia, operates in 14 locations across Africa and Asia. They are a research center whose aim is to secure a sustainable future, reducing poverty, and improving lives through livestock.

AKCP supplied the ILRI facilities in Ethiopia with a sensor solution, based on their Wireless Tunnel™ technology. The system encompasses the monitoring of temperature, humidity, power, fuel, and water tanks. The ILRI campus in Addis Ababa consists of several buildings. As sensors were required in multiple locations around the campus, it made sense to deploy a wireless sensor solution.

Generators:

The campus operates two backup generators, 1,200 and 6,000 KVA. These are fed by 5,000 liters internal and 15,000-liter external fuel tanks. AKCP Wireless Modbus adapters were connected to the genset RS485 output. Wireless Tank Level Sensors check the fuel level to ensure backup power systems have sufficient diesel to operate when required.

Water Tanks:

The ILRI campus has two large water storage tanks. 4.5 meters and 14 meters in height. Wireless Tank Level Sensors were deployed to monitor and alert when the water level is low.

Power Monitoring:

The campus has 5 rooms that require monitoring of power status. Full power monitoring was not needed, so AKCP recommended the use of their Wireless AC Voltage sensor. This provides monitoring for the absence or presence of AC Voltage.

Temperature Sensors:

Wireless temperature and humidity sensors were deployed in the ILRI data center, as well as the electrical room housing the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) for the backup power generators.

AKCP Wireless Tunnel Technology

AKCP Wireless Tunnel sensors are built on LoRa chirp spread spectrum radio technology. They provide long-range and low-power communications with up to 10 years of battery life. It has superior characteristics when compared with other wireless sensor technologies such as Zigbee. AKCP has layered upon the LoRa hardware, their proprietary protocol known as the Wireless Tunnel. With no reliance on the internet or cloud services, it is an end-to-end private LoRa network with local reporting and alerts.

AKCP wired and Wireless Tunnel monitoring system is available now. Contact sales@akcp.com for more details.

AKCP established in the USA in 1981, has 30+ years experience in professional sensor solutions. AKCP created the market for networked temperature, environmental and power monitoring in the data center. Today with over 150 employees and 200,000 installations, AKCP is the world's oldest and largest manufacturer of networked wired and wireless sensor solutions.
