Ionically Charged Minerals & Nutrient Absorption: Bioelectricity Report Released

Brian Yeakey, founder of Nutrionics™, has published a report on the company's website detailing the discoveries in the science of mineral bioavailability that have shaped its philosophy and product development.

-- The new report details recent research that provides insights into improving the body’s absorption of essential nutrients. It explores the factors contributing to the poor bioavailability of minerals, the importance of balanced mineral nutrition, and the role ionically charged minerals may play in achieving such nutrition.

As Yeakey’s report explains, many minerals found in food - such as zinc and iron - have low bioavailability, meaning they’re not well absorbed and used for vital physiological functions. This is partly because mineral absorption is an energy-intensive process, and when the body is low on energy, it becomes even more difficult. Moreover, certain naturally occurring compounds in plants - such as phytates in grains and beans and oxalates in fruits and vegetables - can bind to minerals and further reduce their bioavailability. This is why individuals with relatively healthy, whole-food diets may still have mineral deficiencies.

“Many Americans are not meeting their mineral intake requirements despite adherence to a healthy eating pattern,” Yeakey writes, “According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the US population is under-consuming calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium.”

A mineral’s electrical charge is another major factor influencing its bioavailability since, according to the report, the body can only use minerals when they’re in an ionic form with either a positive or negative charge. Yeakey believes ionically charged minerals are more bioavailable, as they’re more water-soluble and better able to move across cell membranes to participate in physiological processes.

Further, it is Yeakey’s theory that ionically charged nutrients help power the body by contributing to the bioelectrical signaling between the brain, nervous system, and other physiological systems.

“This isn’t the kind of electricity you’d find in a battery, or that powers a lightbulb,” Yeakey explained. “Instead, the human body runs on ‘bioelectricity’ - currents created by the movements of mostly positively charged ions like potassium, sodium, and calcium.”

Yeakey and his team at Nutrionics™ are constantly bringing the latest research in molecular nutrition to bear on their product research and development. They offer wellness products they believe are conducive to improving mineral nutrition.
