Founded in 2023 in Guadeloupe, the non-profit organization fosters social cohesion and expanded human rights in accordance with the United Nation’s 2030 agenda, using sports programs as a tool for personal and collective growth.
According to a recent study published by the University of San Diego in California, sports programs for youth can help to create social cohesion and inclusion through friendly competition, teamwork, physical activity, and interactions with peers. At CSSD, the team focuses on creating basketball camps, tournaments, and community events to encourage diversity and mutual understanding between different groups.
“CSSD uses the universal language of sports to enhance understanding and bridge communities through common experiences and goals,” says a spokesperson for the organization. “Our programs promote dialogue and create a peaceful platform for interaction among diverse groups.”
Through the promotion of regular sports participation, the non-profit organization empowers individuals, especially young people, to develop skills, build confidence, and engage positively with their communities, leading to improved social cohesion and lower rates of violence.
CSSD’s multicultural sports camps also promote cultural exchange, allowing participants to learn from one another, fostering mutual respect and understanding for differences, as part of building stronger, more resilient communities.
In addition to sports events and camps, the organization focuses on educational initiatives and actively advocates for the inclusion of sports at a local and regional level throughout the Caribbean as part of developmental agendas, working to influence policies that recognize the importance of sports for societal wellness.
CSSD works with a number of prominent partners, strengthening partnerships between governments, NGOs, and sports federations to leverage resources and expertise for better integration. Current partners include Kreyol Sports International, Conseil Departemental de la Guadeloupe, Sunrise Airways, FRS Express Des Iles, and Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA).
Communities give positive feedback for CSSD's work. "The Caribbean Sport and Sustainable Development initiative has transformed our community by using sports as a tool for empowerment and education," says Jasmine T.
