Used Parts

Car repair bills in the UK have climbed sharply. The average cost of fixing a car after an accident has risen more than 25% since 2023. Labour rates are up. Parts prices are up. For many drivers, the old habit of going straight to a main dealer for a brand-new component makes less sense.
More people are turning to used car parts instead. Not just to save money, but because the used parts market has genuinely improved, and for many repairs, it’s the more rational choice.
The Numbers Are Hard to Ignore
Repair costs for the UK’s most popular cars rose around 20% in a single year. That covers everything from a Ford Fiesta to a Vauxhall Astra to a BMW 3 Series. The Fiesta averaged £1,159 per repair claim. The Golf hit £1,200. The 3 Series came in at £1,443, the highest of the group, and up 10% on the previous year alone. These are averages. Complex jobs sit well above them.
A single LED or matrix headlight unit on a modern BMW can cost £1,200 to £3,000 new from a dealer. A replacement automatic gearbox, fitted, can reach £5,000. Even on mainstream cars, parts with cameras, sensors, or ADAS technology cost more than they did five years ago.
Labour has moved the same way. Garage rates are up 15 to 20% over the past two years. Modern vehicles, hybrids, EVs, anything with advanced driver assistance systems, need specialist diagnostic equipment and trained technicians. Jobs that used to take two hours now take three.
Repair costs rose 20% in a year. Parts and labour are both heading the same way, and there’s no sign of that reversing.
Why Used Parts Make More Sense Than They Used To
The used parts trade has a reputation that doesn’t quite match what it looks like today. Ten or fifteen years ago, buying second-hand meant taking a risk. Today the industry is regulated: any facility that processes end-of-life vehicles must hold Authorised Treatment Facility status, issue a Certificate of Destruction to the DVLA, and keep traceable records of every transaction.
The better operators go further. Every part is photographed before listing. Donor vehicle mileage is recorded against each item. Most carry a warranty of at least 30 days. That is a very different proposition from a general marketplace listing with a stock photo and no history.
There is a quality point too. A used genuine part, pulled from a low-mileage donor car, keeps the original manufacturer’s tolerances. It fits the way it was designed to fit. It talks to the car’s electronics the way it should. That matters more as cars become increasingly software-defined. A cheap aftermarket alternative often introduces problems the old part never had.
Which Parts Are Worth Buying Used?
Not all of them. Wear items, for example, brake pads, filters, and timing belts, should always be replaced new. Any reputable car dismantler knows this and won’t stock them.
But for components that hold their integrity over years, used makes real sense. Headlight and taillight assemblies are a clear example: a unit removed from a low-mileage car with no lens damage is functionally equivalent to a new one, at a fraction of the cost. The same logic applies to automatic gearboxes from cars written off for reasons unrelated to the drivetrain, engines, suspension components, iDrive or infotainment head units, alloy wheels, airbag modules, and body panels.
These are the repairs where the saving is largest, and where the quality case for genuine used parts is strongest.
A genuine used part from a low-mileage donor car works exactly as the original did. Because it is the original.
What to Look for in a Supplier
The gap between a good used parts business and a poor one is significant. On one end: vague marketplace listings, stock images, no mileage information, no warranty. On the other: documented inventory tied to specific donor vehicles, real photographs, and a warranty that actually means something.
Before buying, check three things. Does the listing state the donor vehicle’s mileage? Are the photos of the actual part? Is there a minimum 30-day warranty? Most established operators also offer delivery within 48 hours and free shipping on lighter items.
For BMW owners, one more thing matters: whether the supplier works within your model range. For example, newer BMWs have generation-specific part numbers and electronics that need careful dismantling. A specialist who knows these platforms catalogues parts accurately and can confirm compatibility before anything ships. A great example is MT Auto Parts (Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire). This specialised BMW breaker covers exactly this range. They stock used BMW parts across lights, engines, gearboxes, body panels, interiors, and electrics, with mileage and condition on every listing, a 30-day warranty on almost all parts, and free standard delivery under 20 kg. Over 17,500 five-star reviews. This is an example most used car parts buyers should look for.
The Shift Is Already Happening
Repair costs are not coming down. Neither are labour rates. The arithmetic has changed, and drivers across the UK have noticed. A used genuine part from a documented, warranted supplier often costs a fraction of the dealer price, and does the same job. For more and more people, that is not a compromise. It is just a smart decision.

Labour rate increases reference Motor Ombudsman survey data. All figures are UK averages and will vary by make, model, specification, region, and garage. Always get multiple quotes.
