San Diego City Attorney Orders Residential Hotel to Vacate Over Mold and Other Living Conditions
Last month, San Diego City Attorney Mara W. Elliott announced that a downtown residential hotel was being vacated due to deplorable living conditions, fire hazards and dangerous code violations. The City Attorney's Office, working with the San Diego Housing Commission, also reported that the remaining 69 occupants were being relocated to habitable and affordable accommodations. They would also be receiving thousands of dollars in relocation costs which the City is advancing as the property owner appeals an order to pay the costs that total almost $340,000.
In the City Attorney's Office reported that the Code Enforcement Division had conducted two inspections of the property in March and April 2022. The agency documented numerous substandard building violations, including mold and rodent infestations.
“Exposure to elevated concentrations of mold or rodent allergens can be a respiratory concern for hotel residents and guests, workers or any building occupants,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing's Huntington Beach facility. “Allergic reactions, which could be immediate or delayed, are quite common. For many who suffer from asthma, exposure to mold or rodent allergens can trigger an attack. Even for those that do not have asthma or allergies to mold, exposure can act as an irritant that can cause issues with the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs.”
