Safe + Sound Week in Puerto Rico Helps to Protect the Health and Safety of Workers

By: WebWire

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that every year, more than 5,000 workers are killed on the job (a rate of 14 per day), and more than 3.6 million suffer a serious job-related injury or illness. While these startling figures are actually an improvement from the death and injury rates of prior decades, before the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act was passed, there is still much to be done to lower these numbers and better protect workers in Puerto Rico and across the nation.

To help increase awareness of health and safety programs, OSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and a coalition of safety organizations supported by thousands of businesses recognize Safe + Sound Week each year in August. Each supports the concept that every workplace should have a safety and health program that includes management leadership, worker participation, and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards. This year's Safe + Sound event takes place from August 15th through the 21st.

Health and safety programs help to:

  • Prevent workplace injuries and illnesses
  • Improve compliance with laws and regulations
  • Reduce costs, including significant reductions in workers' compensation premiums
  • Engage workers
  • Enhance social responsibility goals
  • Increase productivity and enhance overall business operations
