Chord continues to drive efficiency through every aspect of the business, which puts the Company in a strong position to enhance economics and benefit from higher prices while improving our resiliency to create value through the commodity cycle."

Revenue growth

Cyclical industries such as energy can make mediocre companies look strong for a time, but a long-term view reveals which businesses can withstand and adapt to changing conditions. Over the last five years, Chord Energy grew its revenue at a strong 26.4% compounded annual growth rate. Its growth surpassed the average energy upstream and integrated energy company and shows its offerings resonate with customers.

Chord Energy quarterly revenue

Within energy, a single time frame, even a long one, only sheds light on how well a company rode the last commodity cycle. To better assess whether a company compounds through cycles, a longer, ten-year view provides another check. Chord Energy’s annualized revenue growth of 25.9% over the last ten years aligns with its five-year trend, suggesting its demand was predictably strong.

While looking at revenue is important, it can also introduce noise around commodity prices and M&A. Analyzing drivers of revenue, on the other hand, highlights what is happening inside the asset base and whether the economic footprint of a company is expanding. Over the last two years, Chord Energy’s oil production per day averaged 18.1% year-on-year growth while its natural gas liquids production per day averaged 14.6% year-on-year growth. This quarter, Chord Energy reported strong year-on-year revenue growth of 30%, and its $1.71 billion of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 4.8%. Its oil production per day grew 6.3% year on year.

Adjusted EBITDA margin

Adjusted EBITDA margin is an important measure of profitability for the sector and accounts for the gross margins and operating costs mentioned previously. Unlike operating margin, it is not distorted by accounting conventions around reserves, drilling costs and assumptions on commodity consumption from the well or basin. Adjusted EBITDA highlights the economic reality of how much cash production generates before the capital structure (debt service) and the drilling budget (capex) are considered.

Chord Energy has been an efficient company over the last five years. It was one of the more profitable businesses in the energy upstream and integrated energy sector, with an average EBITDA margin of 45.4%.

Looking at the trend in its profitability, Chord Energy’s EBITDA margin rose by 2.6 percentage points over the last year, as its revenue growth gave it operating leverage.

Chord Energy trailing 12-month EBITDA margin

This quarter, Chord Energy generated an EBITDA margin of 52.9%, up 8.9 percentage points year on year. This increase was a positive development and shows it was more efficient. Adjusted EBITDA beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 5.4%.

Free cash flow

Adjusted EBITDA shows how profitable a company’s existing wells are before financing and reinvestment decisions, but free cash flow shows how much value remains after paying the cost of replacing those wells. In upstream energy, production naturally declines over time, so companies must continuously reinvest just to stand still. A producer can report strong EBITDA margins yet generate little or no free cash flow if its wells decline quickly or if new drilling is expensive. Free cash flow therefore captures not only how efficiently a company produces hydrocarbons today, but also how costly it is to sustain that production into the future.

Chord Energy has shown strong cash profitability, driven by its lucrative business model that enables it to reinvest, return capital to investors and stay ahead of the competition. The company’s free cash flow margin was among the best in the energy upstream and integrated energy sector, averaging 22.7% over the last five years.

Absolute free cash flow margin levels matter, but so does stability. All else equal, a steady 25.0% average free cash flow margin across commodity price cycles is preferable to high margins when times are good and negative ones when they’re tough.

Chord Energy’s ratio of quarterly free cash flow volatility to volatility in West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices over the past five years was 4 (lower is better), indicating unusually strong insulation from commodity swings. This stability supports superior capital access in downturns and positions Chord Energy to act as a consolidator when weaker peers are forced to retrench.

Why focus this stability analysis on free cash flow rather than compare revenue or EBITDA with West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices in Chord Energy’s case? What ultimately matters is not how much revenue or profit a company earns when prices are high but how much cash it can generate when prices are low. Free cash flow is the superior metric because it includes everything from hedging effectiveness to growth and maintenance capex to management behavior during good times and bad.

Chord Energy trailing 12-month free cash flow margin

Chord Energy’s free cash flow came in at $399.6 million in Q3, equivalent to a 23.4% margin. That was an improvement, with its margin 6.8 percentage points higher than in the same quarter last year.

Key takeaways from Chord Energy’s Q3 results

Chord Energy’s quarter was softer overall: Revenue came in well ahead of analysts’ consensus estimates, but EPS fell short. Shares remained flat at $132.28 immediately after the results.
