What Happened?

Shares of content production and distribution company Sphere Entertainment (NYSE: SPHR) fell 12.3% in the afternoon session after Craig-Hallum analyst Ryan Sigdahl downgraded the stock from Buy to Hold and reduced the price target to $132 from $170. According to TipRanks, Sigdahl pointed to demand for The Wizard of Oz at Sphere fading faster than expected. The firm cut its estimates to reflect that weaker outlook and lowered its price target to $132 from $170. A reduced target on the show that has been a core driver for the venue gives investors less to underwrite, which is weighing on the shares.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy Sphere Entertainment? Access our full analysis report here, it’s free.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Sphere Entertainment’s shares are very volatile and have had 25 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Sphere Entertainment and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 5 months ago when the stock gained 7% on the news that the company reported first-quarter financial results that significantly surpassed Wall Street forecasts, prompting multiple analysts to raise their price targets. For the quarter, Sphere Entertainment's revenue jumped 38% compared to the previous year, reaching $386.4 million. The company also achieved a significant turnaround, posting operating income of $7.2 million against a $79 million loss during the same period a year earlier. The Las Vegas Sphere venue was a key driver, with its segment revenue and adjusted operating income of $266 million and $74 million, respectively, both exceeding analysts' projections. In response to the strong performance, Guggenheim raised its price target on the stock to $175, BTIG increased its target to $190, and Citizens lifted its target to $175.

Sphere Entertainment is up 20.3% since the beginning of the year, but at $113.43 per share, it is still trading 35.7% below its 52-week high of $176.38 from August 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Sphere Entertainment’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,641.
