What Happened?

Shares of data storage manufacturer Seagate (NASDAQ: STX) jumped 4.9% in the afternoon session after multiple Wall Street research desks pushed back against competitor capacity fears, arguing that the previous session's selloff was overdone.

The updates followed a sharp prior-session drop triggered by reports that Toshiba plans to double its hard drive manufacturing capacity in the Philippines by fiscal 2027.

Bernstein reiterated an Outperform rating and called the reaction misunderstood, while Citi stated that the hard disk drive industry is under-shipping demand by a wide margin, according to TipRanks and StreetInsider. Citi analyst Asiya Merchant added that Toshiba relies on third-party suppliers for media and recording heads, which bottlenecks any rapid supply ramp, according to StreetInsider.

Morgan Stanley urged clients to buy the dip, noting that Toshiba's expansion matches underlying market growth rather than creating an oversupply shock, according to TipRanks.

Adding momentum, Goldman Sachs analyst James Schneider named Seagate a top tactical chip pick ahead of earnings, forecasting 2% revenue upside and 3% guidance upside driven by hard-drive pricing and heat-assisted magnetic recording progress, according to TipRanks.

The rebound was largely confined to hard drive makers, with Western Digital climbing 7% alongside Seagate while broader flash storage and memory peers traded essentially flat.

For high-capacity storage makers, isolated capacity headlines rarely derail operating margins when hyperscale data demand continues to outpace industry output. Because manufacturing leading-edge nearline drives requires proprietary recording technologies that competitors cannot quickly replicate, disciplined incumbents retain their pricing power.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $889.48, up 4.8% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Seagate’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 70 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 13 days ago when the stock gained 4.6% on the news that growing optimism surrounding agentic artificial intelligence and Meta Platforms' Muse application fueled expectations of higher demand for central processing units. Reuters reported that Meta's Muse application has highlighted the specialized hardware needed to support these next-generation workflows. While initial generative AI infrastructure prioritized graphics accelerators for model training, agentic frameworks depend heavily on central processing units to coordinate complex operations and manage logic across sequential processes.

This shift suggests a broadened demand profile across semiconductor hardware suppliers as autonomous enterprise software capabilities expand.

Seagate is up 209% since the beginning of the year, but at $889.48 per share, it is still trading 18.7% below its 52-week high of $1,094 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Seagate’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $10,450.

ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.

AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
