What happened?

Shares of automotive parts company LKQ (NASDAQ: LKQ) fell 18.8% in the morning session after the company reported preliminary third-quarter results projecting a net loss, withdrew its full-year 2026 financial guidance, and announced an immediate chief executive officer change.

LKQ Corporation reported that it anticipates a third-quarter 2026 net loss of $16 million to $32 million, down sharply from net income of $178 million in the corresponding period a year earlier, a company press release revealed. In its financial update, the company confirmed the withdrawal of its full-year 2026 outlook and disclosed the retention of consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal to address operational disruptions linked to an ERP implementation in Germany. According to a company announcement, the board appointed Salvatore A. Abbate as President and Chief Executive Officer effective December 15, 2026, succeeding Justin Jude, who departed immediately. LKQ also stated that Board Chairman John Mendel and Audit Committee Chair Sue Gove will oversee leadership through an interim Office of the CEO. The sudden combination of a quarterly loss, retracted financial guidance, and an unexpected executive shakeup fueled investor apprehension regarding the company's European operational challenges.

What is the market telling us

LKQ’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 7 moves greater than 5% over the last year. Moves this big are rare for LKQ and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 12 months ago when the stock gained 6.2% on the news that it reported third-quarter profits that significantly beat Wall Street's expectations, overshadowing a slight revenue miss and a cut to its full-year guidance.

The vehicle components provider posted adjusted earnings of 84 cents per share, which was well ahead of the average analyst estimate of 76 cents. Revenue for the period came in at $3.50 billion, just missing the $3.53 billion consensus. Despite management lowering its full-year adjusted profit guidance to a midpoint of $3.08 per share, investors appeared to focus on the strong bottom-line outperformance in the quarter. The 11% earnings beat demonstrated better-than-expected profitability, which was enough to send the shares higher even with the mixed overall report.

LKQ is down 41.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $17.69 per share, it is trading 49.2% below its 52-week high of $34.80 from February 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of LKQ’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $312.60.
