What happened?

Shares of property and casualty insurer Selective Insurance Group (NASDAQ: SIGI) jumped 5.3% in the afternoon session after the company reported third-quarter 2026 financial results, increased its dividend, and authorized a new $200 million share repurchase program.

According to a company press release, Selective Insurance Group reported net income per diluted common share of $2.11 and non-GAAP operating income per diluted common share of $2.37. Return on equity was 15.1%, and non-GAAP operating return on equity was 16.9%. The company's GAAP combined ratio improved to 96.8% from 98.6% in the previous year. A combined ratio below 100% indicates an underwriting profit for an insurer. In addition, after-tax net investment income grew 16% to $127 million. The company also announced a 12% dividend increase alongside the new share repurchase authorization.

What is the market telling us

Selective Insurance Group’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 1 move greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 6 months ago when the stock gained 11.2% on the news that the company reported first-quarter 2026 results that missed analyst expectations on several key metrics, though it still posted year-over-year growth. The property and casualty insurer's revenue of $1.36 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $1.69 both fell short of Wall Street estimates. However, investors appeared to look past the misses and focus on the underlying growth, as revenue still increased 5.7% and book value per share grew 12.4% compared to the same quarter last year. The outlook for the next 12 months also appeared promising, with analysts forecasting 11.6% growth in full-year EPS and a strong 15.4% increase in book value per share.

The positive market reaction suggests that the forward-looking guidance and solid growth in book value outweighed the softer-than-expected quarterly performance.

Selective Insurance Group is up 16.6% since the beginning of the year, and at $97.37 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $100.15 from July 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Selective Insurance Group’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,219.
