What Happened?

Shares of professional services firm Marsh (NYSE: MRSH) jumped 4.7% in the afternoon session after the company reported third-quarter 2026 financial results with revenue growth of 8% and a 10% increase in adjusted earnings per share. According to the company’s release, third-quarter GAAP earnings were $1.69 a share and adjusted earnings were $2.03. Underlying revenue grew 5%. GAAP operating income rose 4%, and adjusted operating income rose 6%. For the nine months, GAAP earnings were $6.68 a share and adjusted earnings rose 9% to $8.29. On the call, chief executive John Doyle said Consulting grew in People and Investments and in Management Consulting. In Risk and Insurance Services, the Risk business accelerated, while reinsurance still faced a soft market and executed well. Marsh bought back $500 million of stock in the quarter and $2 billion year to date.

Doyle said the Thrive program, launched a year ago with a $400 million savings target, is now expected to save $600 million. The extra comes from Business and Client Services and from technology. The added savings are meant to fund more producers and consultants, new products, the brand, and technology. Market research was strong enough that Marsh moved Guy Carpenter and Mercer onto the Marsh name several months early. Business and Client Services is building shared work in client onboarding, data intake, and commercial support, and is shifting work to capability centers. Doyle said artificial intelligence is already in client work, operations, and daily use by colleagues, including client products, consulting on artificial-intelligence projects, work for digital-infrastructure customers, and tools for producers. The company said the cost of reaching the savings will be about $750 million, with most of the actions taken by the end of 2028 and the savings spread fairly evenly across the three years.

The shares closed the day at $186.43, up 4.5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Marsh’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 3 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 6 months ago when the stock gained 4.6% on the news that the company reported strong first-quarter 2026 results that showed solid growth in both revenue and earnings, beating Wall Street's expectations. Marsh & McLennan announced that its consolidated revenue for the quarter reached $7.60 billion, a 7.6% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. On an underlying basis, organic revenue grew by 4%. The company's adjusted earnings per share came in at $3.29, rising from $3.06 in the prior-year quarter. Both the revenue and adjusted EPS figures surpassed analysts' consensus estimates, signaling a positive performance for the professional services firm.

Marsh is up 2.2% since the beginning of the year, and at $186.43 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $203.85 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Marsh’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,151.
