5 NFL Players Stepping Into Bigger Roles This 2026 Season
The opening weeks of an NFL season can quickly reveal which players are ready for greater responsibility. Established starters can become focal points, while younger contributors often receive opportunities that significantly change their importance.
That process is already visible in 2026. From quarterbacks assuming control of offenses to defenders receiving expanded assignments, several players are moving into more influential positions. Their early performances indicate how those changes could shape their teams throughout the season.
1. Shough Seizes the Starting Role Early
Team: New Orleans Saints
Position: QB
Tyler Shough entered his second season in New Orleans with considerably different expectations. After guiding the Saints to a 5-4 record as a rookie starter, he returned for 2026 as the unquestioned starting quarterback and a central piece of Kellen Moore’s offense.
That status changes how Shough is evaluated. He is no longer simply a young quarterback receiving an opportunity. His decisions, accuracy, and ability to create explosive plays now influence how New Orleans structures its offense week to week.
The expanded responsibility also creates another layer for followers of FanDuel NFL props. Shough’s growing control of the offense provides additional context around passing attempts, completions and yardage as his role develops throughout the campaign.
More importantly, the Saints are building around him. New Orleans strengthened the receiving group during the offseason while retaining Chris Olave, giving Shough multiple options who can challenge coverage. One connection, however, is already becoming particularly important.
2. Olave Forms A Key Partnership
Team: New Orleans Saints
Position: WR
Chris Olave provides the established presence Shough needs. The receiver entered 2026 after recording career highs of 100 receptions, 1,163 yards and nine touchdowns the previous season, creating a proven foundation for New Orleans’ evolving passing attack.
Their connection has continued developing. Against Detroit in Week 1, Shough connected with Olave on a deep completion, showing how their partnership can stretch defenses rather than function only through shorter, possession-based throws.
Trust is becoming central to that relationship. The Saints have highlighted the growing chemistry between the pair, while Olave has spoken about the momentum they began establishing late last season. That familiarity can matter as Shough assumes greater control of the offense.
Their progression illustrates how one expanded role can influence another. Shough’s development creates opportunities for Olave to become an increasingly important target. Elsewhere in the NFL, bigger responsibilities are emerging for different reasons, including significant changes to defensive schemes.
3. Green Expands His Role in a New Scheme
Team: Baltimore Ravens
Position: EDGE
Mike Green entered 2026 with Baltimore expecting considerably more from its second-year pass rusher. He recorded 3.5 sacks as a rookie, but the Ravens believed his underlying performance suggested he could produce more under their reshaped defensive approach.
The change is partly schematic. Green has described Baltimore’s new pass-rushing philosophy as more attacking than the approach used previously. That gives his explosiveness and ability to challenge offensive tackles a clearer role in the defense.
NFL matchup analysis can provide additional context as competition remains significant after Baltimore added Trey Hendrickson, but Green still occupies an important position in the rotation. Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has discussed using Green alongside Hendrickson and Tavius Robinson to create different problems for opposing protection schemes.
That means Green’s bigger role is about more than simply accumulating snaps. Baltimore is asking him to become a more effective specialist within a system designed to emphasize pressure. A similar transition is occurring in Minnesota, although Dallas Turner’s increased responsibility extends beyond his assignments.
4. Turner Steps Into a Leadership Void
Team: Minnesota Vikings
Position: EDGE
Dallas Turner’s third season has brought a significant change in status. Jonathan Greenard’s departure created an opening on Minnesota’s edge, moving Turner into a more prominent role after two seasons developing in Brian Flores’ defense.
Turner has responded quickly. Through three games, he recorded 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble, including two sacks against Chicago. Those numbers offer early evidence that greater responsibility is coming with increased production.
His transition also extends into leadership. Turner has acknowledged Greenard’s influence and said he’s become more vocal himself. That creates a different challenge from simply replacing snaps or generating pressure from the edge.
Minnesota now needs Turner to combine production with a larger presence within the defensive front. That progression from emerging contributor to established figure mirrors another development in Seattle, where Jaxon Smith-Njigba has moved firmly toward the center of the passing attack.
5. Smith-Njigba Becomes the Focal Point
Team: Seattle Seahawks
Position: WR
Jaxon Smith-Njigba entered 2026 with little uncertainty surrounding his importance after producing 1,793 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last season. His opening performances have only strengthened his position at the top of Seattle’s receiving hierarchy.
Through three games, Smith-Njigba had already collected 27 receptions for 405 yards and six touchdowns. He exceeded 120 receiving yards in every appearance, providing Seattle with consistent production despite changing game situations.
The volume is equally revealing. Smith-Njigba received 36 targets across those three games, including 14 against Washington. That workload shows how often Seattle looks to him when putting the ball in the air.
His development therefore represents more than another statistical step forward. Smith-Njigba has become the receiver around whom the passing game can operate. Like Shough, Olave, Green and Turner, his increased responsibility shows how quickly established expectations can evolve once a new NFL season begins.
Bigger Roles Can Reshape a Season
Expanded responsibility doesn’t come through a single route. Shough is establishing himself as New Orleans’ quarterback, Olave is strengthening an important partnership, Green is adapting to a different defensive approach, and Turner is combining production with leadership.
Smith-Njigba represents another stage entirely, moving from established playmaker toward offensive focal point. Their circumstances differ, but each player now carries greater influence than before. How effectively they handle those responsibilities could shape both their individual seasons and their teams’ broader trajectories.
