Nadrich Accident Injury Lawyers, a California personal injury law firm with 17 offices throughout the state, urges the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban formaldehyde in chemical hair relaxing and straightening products. The FDA recently missed its own April deadline to ban the use of the carcinogenic chemical in the products.

“Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and the FDA needs to ban its use in chemical hair relaxing products as soon as possible to protect the health of the public,” said Jeffrey Nadrich, managing partner of Nadrich Accident Injury Lawyers.

The FDA, in Spring 2023, issued a proposed rule which would ban the use of formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in chemical hair relaxing and straightening products. The ban had been scheduled to go into effect in April 2024, but April passed without the ban being implemented.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO), classifies formaldehyde as “carcinogenic to humans.”

The U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) lists the chemical as “known to be a human carcinogen.”

A 2022 study led by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences found that women who used chemical hair straightening products more than four times in the last year had over double the risk of developing uterine cancer compared to women who did not use the products. The study found that the risk of developing uterine cancer by age 70 was 1.64 percent for women who never used hair straighteners and 4.05 percent for frequent users of the products.

A study published in International Journal of Cancer in 2019 found that women who used chemical hair straightening products at least every eight weeks had about a 30 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who did not. As a result, numerous hair straightener cancer lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers such as L’Oréal.
