Lenovo Implements AI to Create Awareness of Gen Z’s Mental Health
Lenovo’s Work For Humankind has taken a bold step forward, incorporating AI and cutting-edge tech to delve into the digital personas of today’s youth. The program, titled ‘Meet Your Digital Self’, aims to help Gen Z in their mental struggles by developing 3D, life-like personas of their digital personalities.
Younger people, especially Gen Z, are seen to suffer from mental problems the most. More than 67% of the generation feels they are distinct from their online selves, while 49% believe it’s easier to talk about their feelings online. This concern has been one of the prominent reasons for loneliness and depression in the population.
Lenovo utilized its latest AI and tech solutions in this maiden research to bring digital personas to life. Two participants were able to have natural conversations with their online personalities and family members, brought to human-like avatars. The company accessed data participants put into their online accounts to craft 3D personas that could adjust their expressions, tones, and movements with real-time discussions.
The tech company partnered with prominent mental health NGOs, including Shout in the UK, Anata no Ibasho in Japan, and Crisis Text Line in Puerto Rico and the USA. These non-profits provide supervised training to individuals who then offer mental health support to millions in need.
Shout’s mental health director, Sarah Kendrick, said, “One in eight people globally grapple with a mental health condition, with Gen Z experiencing the greatest impact, where that figure rises to one in five. The type of AI innovation in Lenovo’s ‘Meet Your Digital Self’ social experiment shows promise as a way in which generations with different understandings of online personas can meet and understand each other.”
According to Lenovo, 60% of Gen Z feel hesitant to have in-depth conversations with their family. The talk helped family members understand and accept facts about their youngsters’ true selves as they present themselves online. The experiment proved that technology can positively impact the mental health of Gen Z and bridge the gap between their digital and real-world identities.
“It’s necessary to realize the importance of healthy digital balance for mental health,” said Emily Ketchen, CMO at Lenovo. “We must implement smart technologies and AI responsibly for the well-being of all. We hope Lenovo’s broad technologies and ‘Meet Your Digital Self’ social experiment could work together to benefit society and communities globally.”
