On May 25, Key Biscayne residents gathered on the Village Green to honor those who died in military service. The Memorial Day observance, attended by veterans, families, and local officials, highlighted the lasting impact of military service on surviving spouses, parents, and adult children.

In this same community, Parent Your Parents, an elder law practice in Key Biscayne, works with families who carry long-term responsibilities for aging relatives. The practice addresses the practical aspects of care that may begin quietly after public tributes end, when an older parent or spouse needs help with medical decisions, finances, or long-term care planning.

The Memorial Day service, attended by Parent Your Parents founder H. Frances Reaves, Esq., highlighted the sacrifices of military service and drew attention to families who live with its long-term effects. Residents honored the fallen through readings, tributes, and moments of silence, calling for ongoing recognition of their sacrifice. These reflections also connect to the reality many local families face as they support parents and older loved ones in later life.

Parent Your Parents works with families facing these challenges every day. Based in Key Biscayne, the practice advises families on elder law, Medicaid planning, estate planning, probate, and related advocacy matters. The firm’s work often starts when adult children notice a parent struggling with bills, insurance, or maintaining independence. Families may then find that legal documents are outdated, incomplete, or missing, leaving critical decisions to be made under pressure.

These issues are often complex in South Florida, where many households include retirees and multigenerational families. Parent Your Parents helps families address how to fund care, preserve assets where appropriate, support a surviving spouse, and coordinate with government benefits. The practice helps organize these concerns into a structured plan, so families are better prepared if a health crisis occurs.

The Memorial Day observance in Key Biscayne served as a reminder that remembrance can extend beyond a single day of flags and speeches. For many residents, it highlighted the ongoing responsibilities of caring for an aging parent or surviving spouse. These duties may include arranging medical appointments, monitoring medications, managing legal paperwork, helping prevent financial abuse, and making important decisions about housing, safety, and care.

Parent Your Parents’ work reflects this broader sense of duty. By helping families create wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health care directives, and long-term care plans, the practice aims to reduce uncertainty that can arise with aging and incapacity. Early planning can help older adults express their wishes clearly and give children and caregivers practical guidance as circumstances change. This planning may also help reduce conflict among relatives when cooperation is essential.

The firm also helps families identify and plan for risks related to elder abuse and financial exploitation, which can arise when an older person’s judgment is impaired or when there is confusion about who is authorized to act. In a region with many retirees, scams, predatory financial arrangements, and misuse of legal authority can be ongoing concerns. By helping families establish appropriate legal structures and encouraging regular review of documents and accounts, Parent Your Parents works to reduce risks for vulnerable elders.

“While Memorial Day in Key Biscayne formally honors those who gave their lives in uniform, the values expressed at the memorial may also resonate with families navigating a loved one’s later years,” H. Frances Reaves, Esq., said.

Themes of remembrance, gratitude, and responsibility often continue in private conversations at home, in hospitals, and in care facilities. In these quieter moments, the challenge is not only to remember but also to act in ways that uphold a parent’s dignity and well-being.
