Nigeria Health Security Progress Driven By Multisectoral Collaboration: Report
The Global Health Advocacy Incubator has released a new report highlighting how Nigeria's multisectoral partnerships have driven major health security improvements, including increased epidemic preparedness and immunization investments.

Washington, United States, August 8, 2025 -- The newly published report outlines Nigeria's significant strides in health security, achieved through strategic collaboration among government bodies, civil society, and international partners.

Titled "Building Health Security in Nigeria: A Partnership for Progress," the publication presents data-driven evidence of enhanced epidemic preparedness, strengthened health systems, and increased domestic investment in public health.
According to the findings, Nigeria's Joint External Evaluation (JEE) score for health emergency preparedness rose from 39 percent to 54 percent in recent years—an indicator of improved readiness for outbreaks and health crises. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention received a record allocation of 2.9 billion Naira, supporting expanded surveillance and response operations.
The Global Health Advocacy Incubator's (GHAI) report emphasizes the importance of sustained collaboration between local organizations, such as LISDEL and BudgIT, and Nigerian authorities. This approach helped secure an additional 300 billion Naira—approximately USD 200 million—in domestic funding during a time of declining global health financing.
Progress in immunization was also noted: Nigeria fully allocated $79.2 million toward its domestic immunization program and fulfilled 25% of its joint financing obligations for Gavi-supported vaccines. The report cites evidence that every dollar spent on vaccines saves $21 in direct healthcare costs, and up to $54 when accounting for long-term health benefits.
"The progress achieved through collaborative efforts demonstrates that with political will, adequate resources, and strategic partnerships, it is possible to create a resilient health system," said Vandana Shah, Vice President for Health Systems Strengthening at GHAI. "Nigeria is positioning itself as a beacon of health security innovation for other low- and middle-income countries."
The report also flags hypertension screening as a critical area for future improvement. Although up to 38 percent of Nigerians are affected by hypertension, only 8 percent of women and 5 percent of men receive a proper diagnosis, underscoring the need to expand primary healthcare access.
As international support declines, the report concludes that Nigeria's model offers a replicable path for sustainable financing, robust preparedness, and equitable care through multisectoral collaboration.
