In Elisabeth Ludlow’s Novel, A Place of Justice, university alumni face dramatic challenges, decades after graduation
Elisabeth Ludlow, author, historian, and linguist, has released her compelling novel, A Place of Justice: How Can a Family in Crisis Secure Personal, Societal, and Criminal Equity? The book, set against the evocative backdrop of capital city Edinburgh, explores intense emotional issues faced by a group of old friends dealing with relationship trauma, serious crime, and systemic failures in social care.
In A Place of Justice, readers are introduced to Emily and her husband, Luke, who are thrust into a tumultuous journey of seeking justice. The narrative unfolds as Emily’s former boyfriend, Jimmy, reappears more than thirty years after abandoning her, aged just 19 and pregnant with Lily. His return stirs up long-buried pain and forces Emily, Luke, and Lily, along with Lily’s husband Archie, to grapple with issues of forgiveness and closure. And what are the future implications for Lily and Archie’s baby daughter Daisy?
The story takes an alarming turn as the family encounters additional challenges, including the mysterious disappearance of Luke’s legal client, in his final case before retirement, and an historic murder case that suddenly impacts their lives. Alongside these personal crises, Emily and her friend Felicity uncover worrying substandard care in a local nursing home, highlighting broader issues within the social care system.
The novel intricately weaves these various threads into a narrative that is both moving and thought-provoking. It addresses central themes such as the quest for justice, the struggle for personal closure, and the relentless pursuit of reform in a flawed social care system. The book provides a vivid portrayal of how personal and societal justice intertwine, offering readers a powerful exploration of the emotional and practical challenges involved in advocating for vulnerable loved ones. Readers will quickly become immersed in this tale of five former Edinburgh University students; there is beauty and humour, but tears may also beckon. And the role of place, be it a thriving florist’s business in New York, an apartment overlooking the Seine in Paris, or a gracious central London drawing room, is a central feature.
Elisabeth Ludlow’s A Place of Justice is not only an absorbing read, but also a valuable resource for those navigating similar struggles in their own lives. The novel encourages readers to reflect on the complexities of forgiveness and justice, and the often daunting task of securing adequate care and support for those who need it most.
The book can now be purchased through major retailers and online platforms.
About the Author
This is Elisabeth Ludlow’s first novel, and she has loved writing it. She completed it in an amazing seven weeks last summer, during which time she was totally addicted to the task, relishing each word, getting to know her characters as she wrote, and identifying with their hopes and mix of life challenges. The power of a great book never ceases to fascinate her, so the goal of creating a "good read" was her inspiration. She has always wanted to write a novel, following a background in academic writing, one local history book, and short pieces published in travel writing, and suddenly she had the time to devote to this exciting task. Elisabeth is a linguist, speaking French, German, and Spanish, and worked for many years in higher education advancement, leading a team as they engaged with key supporters, and combining business skills with empathetic relationship-building; she also has a doctorate in history. She loves to travel, and has an insatiable desire to learn. Elisabeth is married with two children, two grandchildren, and an adorable rescue dog.
