Publicist, Author, and Cancer Survivor Lindsey Walker Urges Black Women Entrepreneurs to Develop a Self-Care Routine

By: Get News
After a stage IV cancer diagnosis stopped her in her tracks, Lindsey Walker listened to her body and developed a self-care routine. Years of overworking and not prioritizing herself all in the name of success left her realizing how many women, particularly black women, do not create time for their health and well-being.

Lindsey Walker, publicist and founder of Walker + Associates Media Group, was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 27.

Through media relations, she thrives on helping other women find and amplify their voices in the marketplace. With a passion for working with those in the beverage/spirits, beauty, entertainment, and lifestyle industries, her clients have been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, Essence, and Black Enterprise, to name a few. Resulting in millions of impressions, paid speaking engagements, and brand authority.

However, Lindsey’s mission has grown to include urging black women entrepreneurs to develop a self-care routine within their businesses and lives.

“God used a stage IV cancer diagnosis and six months of chemotherapy to wake me up, and I’ve been up ever since, by His grace,” Walker said. “Never thought I would be a survivor, so I learned to thrive instead.”

Surviving—and thriving

Walker shares her journey of overcoming the diagnosis while still running a successful company in her memoir, Thriving Through the Storm, which is available on Amazon. Overcoming the obstacles life throws in one’s way is difficult, but Walker seeks to teach others to walk in purpose, faith, and self-love, no matter their troubles.

“Thriving Through the Storm is a personal yet practical how-to that delivers the remedy for surviving life’s lowest moments,” Walker said. “We must show grace to one another because everyone is going through something.”

Putting self-care first

Walker also urges other women to develop a self-care routine and listen to their bodies. By prioritizing themselves, women can accomplish more without compromising themselves or their health in the process.

With Walker + Associates Media Group beside them to tell the world about it, these entrepreneurs can care for themselves and their businesses. Walker said prioritizing peace should be at the top of the list for black women.

Setting and enforcing boundaries

Learning to set and enforce boundaries has been a vital part of the process for Walker and one she believes more professional black women should explore. Overworking and ignoring the signs her body sent nearly cost Walker her life, and she hopes to warn others to ensure they take time for themselves.

Walker believes women in business should make time to take care of themselves as a part of their work process. When they feel better physically, they have more energy, focus, and drive to complete their work more efficiently and creatively. She also said it’s important to her to take time for prayer because her relationship with God and belief in Jesus have been instrumental to her recovery and overall success.
