“Mia loves going shopping with her mommy on Saturdays. She likes to help add things to the cart and she takes care of the coupons which Mommy says save them lots of money. When she sees her ice cream treats, she wants to add them too, but Mommy says “no” as it’s not in her money plan. That’s when Mia gets really confused. Mommy explains about budgeting and saving and how important it is to work hard, to save, and to plan ahead for what they can afford – in other words, no frivolous shopping.
“Monica Eaton’s picture book story, Money Plan, is a clever approach to teaching young readers about money, saving, budgeting, and working hard. Told in rhyming verse, the story progresses with an almost lyrical tone. The plot follows Mia and her mother as they do the weekly shopping. Using the questions and answers, much like in a real-life scenario, the young reader will appreciate learning along with Mia as she asks the same types of questions that young readers would probably ask. The mother carefully explains what money is and what its purpose is, then goes into details on how to work hard to earn money, how and where to save it, and how to make an effective budget and stick to it. The colorful illustrations help carry the story along. The explanations, accompanied by illustrations, are clear and will help young readers understand something about making and looking after your money. At the end of the book is a glossary of the money terms used in the story. This book is a valuable teaching tool for young readers, as well as being entertaining.”
