“THE CHOICE” focuses on the “choices” made by people involved in the sustainability initiatives of Japanese companies and organizations. Through conversations between a host and representatives of each company or organization, the series explores the struggles they faced and the hopes they held on the road to commercialization, as well as the significance of the “choices” they made.

This episode follows the engineers of Hitachi High-Tech, who incorporated eco-design—a design methodology that reduces environmental impact across the entire product lifecycle, from material selection through production, shipping, use, collection, and disposal—into the GT2000, a CD-SEM (Critical Dimension-Scanning Electron Microscope) used in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The episode delves into the engineers’ aspirations and the behind-the-scenes story of how they achieved both improved measurement performance and reduced environmental impact.
In addition, the production team used a dedicated tool to calculate the CO₂ emissions generated in making the program and offset those emissions with carbon credits that support sustainable forest management, as part of its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the production itself.
