Strayer University celebrates 130 years of championing change in education
Accredited online university recognizes its work to advance inclusivity, career readiness and innovation in honor of 130-year anniversary
Strayer University, an accredited institution of higher learning for working adult students, celebrates its 130-year anniversary by honoring the university’s legacy of championing change to benefit students. Since its founding in 1892, Strayer has remained focused on providing students with accessible and affordable degree offerings, career-relevant curricula, and innovative technologies that advance learning.
Strayer provides flexible online undergraduate and graduate degree programs and career-focused concentrations. For decades, career readiness has remained a pillar of the university’s educational model – beginning with efforts to equip farmers with business skills in the 1900s and expanding to offering on-the-job training in the 1960s when most education was restricted to the classroom.
As an advocate for inclusivity, Strayer has also prepared women for the workforce since the early 1900s, and continues to be a champion for diversity today. In 2021, 72% of students were women and 67% of Strayer students identified as Black or African-American, Hispanic or Latino, or Asian.
“Strayer was truly ahead of its time by offering workforce training to women nearly a century ago, during an era when women weren’t given many opportunities to grow professionally,” said Andréa Backman, president, Strayer University. “Today, we continue to provide economic and academic support for diverse populations that are traditionally underserved. I'm immeasurably proud to be part of an institution with a legacy of valuing inclusivity.”
To further foster student success, Strayer has embedded technology into its academic programming since the 1990s, when it began offering online classes while other universities were still exploring the internet. They’ve continued to deliver interactive course content and introduced support measures designed to keep students engaged in the decades that followed. Now leveraging a virtual assistant, Irving, named after the university’s founder, that helps busy students save critical time and focus on their studies by quickly addressing administrative tasks. Plus, Strayer Studios, a production arm of the university, infuses course curriculum with short films produced by award-winning filmmakers, making it easier for students to understand and remember what they learned.
For 130 years, Strayer University has increased access to education by providing affordable options to today’s learners, while simultaneously driving forward change to better support its students. Their commitment to reinventing education has helped more than 150,000 students from all different backgrounds graduate.
