Unitree's 3.9-million-yuan transformer robot went viral—but do you know what helps it "see"?

On May 12, Unitree released a video.

In the footage, founder Wang Xingxing sat inside a steel machine nearly three meters tall, pushed the joystick, and the mech took a step forward. Then it raised a fist and punched straight through a brick wall. The comments and bullet-screen messages exploded instantly: "Isn't this just a Transformer?"

This is the GD01—Unitree's world-first mass-produced manned transformer robot, priced from 3.9 million yuan. Elon Musk reposted the video with a single word: "cool."

A sci-fi movie prop has actually gone into production. But amid all the buzz, one question never really got asked: how does this 500-kilogram steel giant perceive the world around it?

For a mech to operate reliably in complex environments, the perception system is the most critical layer. The GD01 supports two form-factor transitions—humanoid upright and quadruped crawling. Under both configurations, the field of view, center of gravity, and distances to surrounding obstacles are all in constant flux. This places far more demanding requirements on sensors than an industrial robot working from a fixed station.

Infrared sensing takes on a task here that visible light cannot: capturing spatial information and thermal signatures of surrounding objects in low-light or harshly lit conditions. A mech working outdoors, moving from shadow into direct sunlight, would see ordinary camera image quality fluctuate wildly. Thermal imaging, by contrast, derives its signal from objects' thermal radiation—independent of ambient lighting. This perception stability is a structural advantage, not something patched by algorithms.

This is not theoretical speculation. In industrial inspection, firefighting robotics, and drone obstacle avoidance, near-infrared sensing components have long been standard. A platform like the GD01 pushes the requirements to a higher level—faster response, wider dynamic range, smaller size and lower power consumption, packing the same perception capability into a highly integrated system.

The near-infrared narrowband filter in a robotic perception system plays a role similar to eyeglass lenses—it doesn't generate the image, but it determines whether the light entering the sensor is clean.

Industrial-grade robotic vision sensors typically operate at specific near-infrared wavelengths—commonly 850nm or 940nm. These two wavelengths follow different application logics: 850nm has slightly lower penetration but delivers better imaging quality under indoor fill lighting; 940nm offers stronger interference rejection in outdoor high-ambient-light conditions, because solar radiation at this band is relatively weaker and background noise lower.

Which band to choose depends on the environment where the mech will primarily operate. Once the target band is set, the corresponding near-infrared narrowband filter must cleanly block everything outside that band. If blocking depth is insufficient, stray light leaks in, the sensor signal is contaminated with noise, and the algorithm—working with a blurred image—makes unreliable judgments on distance and obstacles. The results are no longer trustworthy.

MULTI IR carries stock in both 850nm and 940nm near-infrared narrowband filters, with center wavelength tolerance held within ±2nm and blocking depth starting at OD4. This combination of specs already has a stable shipment track record in machine vision, drone sensing, and industrial ranging. A product like the GD01 simply puts the same requirements into a more visually compelling package.

Unitree's investors put it plainly: the core logic of the GD01 is "to express Unitree's superiority in sensors, control systems, and engineering capability through a scenario that easily breaks through the mainstream consciousness."

That's a clear statement. The mech itself is a showroom—what it displays is whether the underlying technology stack is deep enough.

Infrared sensing in this showroom is an unremarkable but irreplaceable component. Get it right, and no one applauds. Get it wrong, and the entire perception system becomes unstable. This is the classic role of infrastructure—the more advanced the industry becomes, the more demanding its requirements grow, yet it will never be the most glamorous item on a launch stage.

But for those working in this field, that is precisely the most solid position to be in.
