Restore Our Earth: Sustainable Solutions to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
SOURCE: Pentair
DESCRIPTION:
by Jerome Pedretti, Executive Vice President and President, Pentair Industrial Technologies
As the global community rallies together to Restore Our Earth™ this Earth Day, much of the discussion is focused on the natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems.
At Pentair, we work to deliver solutions that enable customers to get more value from the resources they use, while helping to achieve a more sustainable outcome. With many countries, cities, and companies implementing carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction and neutrality targets, increasingly we are helping customers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through our technologies to capture and reuse CO2 and methane.
Addressing Climate Change through Carbon Reduction
The increasing levels of greenhouse gases, which include CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and other gases, in the earth’s atmosphere are a substantial contributor to global warming, and a cause of climate change.
Companies are employing many strategies to reduce emissions, such as increasing their energy efficiency and utilizing renewable energy sources. However, some industries cannot avoid emitting greenhouse gasses as part of their processes.
To address this challenge, Pentair has developed sustainable solutions to help customers lower carbon intensity by recovering CO2, methane and other gas emissions from their processes before it is released into the atmosphere and recycle it to produce other valuable byproducts.
A range of different industries including soft drink bottlers, breweries, food and beverage manufacturers, farms, landfills and wastewater plants can utilize these technologies. One specific solution includes capturing biogas emissions, and converting them into usable bio-methane for fuel and liquid CO2 that can be beneficially reused in our customers’ products. Pentair’s average biogas installation has the capacity to capture up to 6,500 metric tons per year of CO2. That means that one, average biogas installation has the capacity to capture as much carbon in one year as 107,479 tree seedlings grown for 10 years1. With over 10 years of experience in the biogas industry our smart, sustainable installations are significantly helping our customers reduce their impact on climate change.
