Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture between RWE Renewables and National Grid, has launched its geophysical survey campaign to study seabed conditions within the project lease area and potential export cable corridors in the New York Bight.

The data collected will help inform safe and responsible project design and engineering, identifying potential geohazards and obstructions, as well as benthic habitats and archaeological resources.

The survey work kicks off this week and will continue through summer 2023 with two vessels.

Once developed, the parcel is expected to support 3 GW of offshore wind generating capacity, enough to power 1 million homes and businesses. The project is expected to be in operation by 2030.

In Feb. 2021, RWE Renewables and National Grid successfully bid to develop 126,000 acres off the coast of New Jersey, the largest area up for grabs in the New York Bight lease auction. The bid of $1.1 billion is the most any developer has paid for rights to develop offshore wind in the U.S.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s New York Bight auction fetched a record total of $4.37 billion from the six winning bidders.
