It’s no secret that Australians love their real estate and home ownership is a a right of passage for many young Aussies. Whilst the house is obviously a very important part of your home, the garden can be just as important and in some cases even more important for the image and feel of your property. Trees, both big and small, make up a huge part of many peoples gardens and can add the defining character that cannot be easily replaced if something were to happen to the tree.

A local Geelong family, the Robinsons, recently discovered that their most dominant backyard tree, an old Crepe Myrtle, was having some serious health issues and required the attention of an expert immediately, so they reached out to Nicholas Checchi from at Pro Tree Services Geelong for some timely advice and assistance and they were in fact able to save the tree and bring it back to full health. Mr Robinson, the man of the house provided us with some more details. “Ever since we moved in about 10 years ago this Crepe Myrtle has been a part of our garden and in a way, our family, the kids grew up playing under it and it’s just always been apart of our home really, so we were very distraught to see the leaves turning yellow in some areas and getting very distorted, it’s never done this before and we really didnt want it to die, so we gave Nick a call and he was able to get it back to full health again within a few weeks, definitely worth every penny”

Nicholas was kind enough to answer a few of our questions as well. “When they first called me around to take a look at it i wasnt sure what to expect as there’s a number of things that can cause leaves to go yellow, but it was pretty clear when i got there that they had an Aphid problem. Aphids can feed on the leaves and during this process inject saliva into the leaf, which can cause the yellowing, but it can also lead to fungi issues down the line as well, so it was a good thing they called me when they did. We were able to take a few steps to get this infestation under control and it seems to have worked which is fantastic for the tree.”

Looking after sick trees isnt all that arborists such as Nick do however, they can perform a host of tree services, such as tree removal (which goes by other names depending on where you’re from such as tree lopping, tree felling and tree surgery), tree pruning, tree trimming and stump removal. An aborist can also perform less invasive services such as tree cabling, possum bands, fungus removal and tree reports (useful if you have any structural or engineering needs and there are local government restrictions on tree removal).

“To be honest we do a real mix of work, tree and stump removal are very popular over the warmer months as more people are outdoors, doing work in their yard, and decide they need a tree cut, or taken down. Trimming and pruning become a lot more popular over the cooler months, especially with fruit trees such as pear or apple trees, and we can perform procedures on these such as crown raising or crown thinning which are both popular, so there’s always someone, somewhere in need of some arborist work all throughout the year, especially in a city the size of Geelong. We deal with a huge range of trees as well, from your standard pine trees, various species of gum trees, yukkas, to more tropical species such as palm trees and more local ones such as bottlebrush trees.”

Nicholas also went on to say “Many people think that removing their tree themselves will be easy enough but i’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve had people call us up needing to finish a job they started and couldnt finish. It can also be an incredibly dangerous job if you dont know what you’re doing or have the right equipment, not to mention the damage you can cause with falling branches and trunks.” Tree related injuries and deaths are generally rare but they can occur, so it’s always a good idea to phone a professional arborist if you have any significant tree care work needing to be done. Most arboricultural companies are happy to provide free advice and a free quote so there’s no excuse for taking unnecessary risks. In the Robinson family’s case they were very lucky as they acted early and were able to get their tree treated properly and thus it was able to be saved.

So whether you have a sick tree in need of urgent attention, need a tree removed to open up your yard to more natural light, or to plant something even better , give an Arborist a call, they’re extremely knowledgeable about all things trees and have undergone extensive tree service training as well as an apprenticeship to get where they are, so they’ll be able to solve your tree problem faster, and to a higher standard then you will be able to on your own.
