How Stem Cell Therapy Compares to Knee Replacement for Knee Pain

Knee pain is debilitating, but navigating all the potential treatment options can be confusing and often leads patients into wondering which option is right for them.

Sitting, standing, walking, driving, even sleeping: people with knee pain know how much harder it can be doing the activities that they need to do every day. Traditional knee replacements can make a real difference, as can regenerative procedures, such as stem cell therapy, that use the body’s own adult stem cells to naturally promote and repair damage in the joint.

Knee pain is debilitating and can often be tough for a patient to manage on their own, but navigating all the potential treatment options can be confusing and often leads patients into wondering which option is right for them. Specifically, patients struggle deciding between joint replacement and regenerative options, such as stem cell therapy, to help manage their pain.

Stem cell therapy is regenerative, meaning that it helps the body rebuild the damage in knees naturally using the body’s own adult stem cells. All people have a reserve of stem cells in their bone marrow and, as stem cells have regenerative power, when they are injected precisely into an area that is damaged or worn, the stem cells help establish an environment conducive to tissue healing and repair.

The procedure used by Dr. Jason Kouri, MD at Atlas Medical Center in Dallas, TX takes less than 30 minutes, is minimally invasive, virtually painless, requires no hospitalization or downtime. For many patients, stem cell therapy provides pain relief that can last for years and in some cases it can facilitate permanent pain relief and repair.

The science behind stem cell therapy is complicated and, even though it’s been used in orthopedic medicine for over a decade, it is still somewhat a “new frontier” territory, although the potential is enormous. At Atlas Medical center, Dr. Kouri, along with Lisa Moore, his nurse practitioner, have performed over 2,000 regenerative procedures. In a recent patient data outcome study that Atlas Medical Center conducted, representing 119 patients (196 knees) using their own adult stem cells for treatment, 84.2% experienced relief by their 6 month follow up.

The process of getting a knee replacement is quite different than getting a regenerative procedure. A knee replacement is invasive, painful, requires hospitalization and downtime. According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 85% of all total knee replacement operations performed are successful for approximately only 10-15 years, depending on the patient’s level of activity, after which time revision surgery may be recommended by your doctor.

In addition, knee replacement surgery can result in physical complications ranging from pain and swelling to implant rejection, infection, blood clots, and bone fractures. Pain is the most common complication following a knee replacement and can continue for up to six months or more after surgery.

Perhaps, one of the most significant differences between stem cell therapy and knee replacement surgery is the amount of recovery time required for each procedure. Knee replacement is a significant surgery whereas a stem cell procedure is not. With a stem cell therapy procedure there is no general anesthesia necessary. Patients can walk out after the 30-minute office visit and resume their normal day to day activities.

The other obvious difference is once the joint replacement is performed there is no “turning back”. Good or bad- patients are stuck with the results.

Regenerative therapy offers an alternative to surgery and traditional pain management and for some it can be an excellent standalone treatment or an adjunct to traditional treatment modalities.
