Hosted at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., the ceremony honored two companies for upholding high standards of responsible business conduct. PVH accepted the Sustainable Operations award as lead investor of a best-in-class apparel manufacturing facility in Hawassa, Ethiopia.

PVH Chairman and CEO Emanuel Chirico accepted the award before an audience of approximately 125 business leaders, government officials, including Under Secretary David Hale, and several U.S. ambassadors to African nations.

While introducing PVH, Acting Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment Manisha Singh noted the company’s commitment to people, the environment and communities.

“PVH’s efforts in Hawassa are a model of bilateral cooperation. They’re providing a better future for workers, a better future for their families, and responsible industrialization,” Ms. Singh said. “We want other companies to look at their model and say, `We should be doing this as well.’”

Mr. Chirico said PVH set out to make a blueprint of a state-of-the-art apparel supply chain facility that made financial sense to complement sustainable operations.

“We brought like-minded partners together to create a model park designed to spur economic growth without polluting or depleting Ethiopia’s natural resources,” said Mr. Chirico. “This honor is a testament to our company’s unwavering commitment to power industry change – the right way.”

Established in 1999, the annual Secretary of State Award for Corporate Excellence recognizes U.S. companies representing American values in their business practices worldwide and contributing to the growth and sustainable development of the local economies in which they work.

Receiving an ACE award along with PVH was beauty company Alaffia, which was honored for its efforts in women’s empowerment.
