Trial On Xarelto Dangers Postponed To Mid-March

The original intention was for the trial of the bellwether Xarelto lawsuit to take place in February 2017. However, due to a sporting event, people will have to wait before hearing about the Xarelto dangers in court. The sporting event in question was the NBA All Star game, held by the NBA in New Orleans, between February 17 and 19.

Although a disappointment for those waiting for the case to start, particularly since there have been more than 10,000 bleeding cases, all parties did agree to the postponement. It was understood that it would be difficult for the involved parties to concentrate on the trial, and the city itself would be overrun with players, fans, and staff, which could pose a threat to a case of such magnitude. Eastern District of Louisiana U.S. District Court Judge Eldon Fallon will preside over all Xarelto cases.

Xarelto is one of two anti-coagulant, blood thinning drugs that were the most recent to be introduced to the market. It was hailed to be far better than warfarin, particularly because it was more patient-centered. All blood thinners carry an inherent risk of bleeding, however, and this was a particular risk with drugs such as warfarin.

For years, medical professionals, patients, and carers have looked for an easier option. This is what Xarelto, as well as the other drug, promised to deliver. However, plaintiffs claim that they were unaware of Xarelto not having a reversing agent or antidote, which is supposed to be used in the event of the occurrence of uncontrollable bleeding. Warfarin, for example, can be reversed through the administration of vitamin K.

Plaintiffs have also claimed that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson division, and Bayer, responsible for the manufacturing of Xarelto, suggested that the benefit of Xarelto was that little monitoring of patients was needed with this drug. Yet, they claim, it would be more prudent for patients to be closely monitored because there is no antidote.

With the NBA All Star game now over, plaintiffs are getting ready for the trials to commence. The first Xarelto trial will take place in the Eastern District of Louisiana on March 13. The second trial is scheduled for April 24.
