Story Monster Helps Kids, Parents Choose Books Worth Devouring

PRLog - Nov. 14, 2013 - CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A new awards program identifies quality children's books that have been kid-tested and judge-certified, making it easier for buyers to choose exceptional fiction and nonfiction books that parents will approve and youths will enthusiastically devour. It’s called Story Monster Approved.
The colorful, kid-friendly Story Monster Approved seal attracts the attention of young readers much more than a sticker intended for adult scrutiny. Kids know when they see the Story Monster Approved patch it means children their own age enjoyed the book and are recommending they read it, too. How do they know that? Because after books pass the first round of rigorous judging – which is done by industry experts, who only certify books if they score 75 out of a possible 80 – the books are then judged by a panel of youth judges who must also endorse the books before they can receive the official seal of approval.
How Does it Work?
The Story Monster Approved designation was developed by Five Star Publications, Inc. to recognize and honor accomplished authors in the field of children's literature, as well as recognize newly published authors. Approval favors stories that inspire, inform, teach or entertain, and publication date is open to any year as long as the book is still in print. Five Star is the same company that launched the Dragonfly Book Awards program, now in its fourth year. However, Story Monster Approved is not a contest.
"Book contests award first, second and third-place or honorable mention designations, which means great books can lose out to other great books by a very tiny margin," explains Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications, Inc. "I always thought it was a shame to see a quality book not get the recognition it deserves just because another book was ever so slightly better. It reminds me of being in school with a teacher who grades on a curve. A student who rightfully earns an A could actually end up with a C. The Story Monster Approved evaluation system eliminates that concern. All exceptional books will be recognized."
How do Authors Earn a Story Monster Approved Seal?
Authors interested in having their books considered for Story Monster Approved designation should visit www.StoryMonsters.com and download an entry form.
Books are divided into the following categories with distinctions made between fiction and nonfiction:
Preschool to Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, and Grades 4-6.
Awarded authors receive permission to use the Story Monster Approved seal on collateral materials and websites, a Story Monster Approved certificate, a Story Monster T-shirt, an Iron-on Story Monster Approved patch, 100 Story Monster Approved book stickers a professional news release sent by Five Star Publications to targeted media groups and an "Approved" book listing on the Story Monsters website with a link to the author's website and a web address to where the book can be purchased.
The cost to enter is $85 for one title in one category, $75 per title when multiple books are entered or $75 per category when one book is entered in multiple categories. Contest fees go toward judges' compensation and administrative costs, with a portion donated to the Five Star Literacy Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving children's literacy skills, as well as their enthusiasm for reading and writing by providing guidance and funds to schools for in-school book writing and publishing, author visits, books, workshops, curriculum, and other activities.
