PR Log - Apr 17, 2013 -, a website devoted to helping small firm architects succeed, recently posted a video interview with award-winning San Diego Architect-Developer Jonathan Segal, FAIA. Jonathan Segal, FAIA, is downtown San Diego's most successful and pioneering architect-developer. In addition to designing and developing projects, Jonathan Segal, FAIA, also co-founded the Masters of Real Estate Development (MRED) program at Woodbury University with architect Ted Smith.

The past five years have brought great challenges for architects in the United States and around the world with architects in the U.S. experiencing near 14% unemployment during the height of the recession. These challenges in the construction industry have prompted architects to look for new and profitable business models that deviate from the typical architect-as-designer role.

One of these alternate models is the model of 'Architect as Developer'. In this business model, the architect raises the funds to get a project started, and provides the design and necessary approvals for permit and construction. While not the first architect to develop his own projects, Jonathan Segal, FAIA, is one of the most widely known and prolific architects who follows this model.

"Developing our own projects gives us control that we wouldn't otherwise have," remarks Segal. He has been designing, developing and building his own projects in downtown San Diego since the late 1980's. And he has found the rewards of doing so are unparalleled. Segal sold one of his successful projects for $45 million.

"It was a real pleasure to have Jonathan Segal on Business of Architecture," said interviewer Enoch Sears. "Jonathan has a vast amount of experience and he is very willing to share this information to help other architects break free of the cycle of low-paying work. Architects have a unique skill set, and they are looking for unique and alternate ways to apply their skills."

In the video interview on, Segal explains how architects can take advantage of their design skills to build equity in their own projects while shaping the built environment in positive ways. "[Designing and developing] is an amazing opportunity," says Segal. "Now is the time to do it." Segal added that he sees cost of construction and land prices rising dramatically in the coming years. "This is the perfect storm," states Segal. "I haven't seen low interest rates like this in years". The rewards can be huge for architects who venture into this field.

Segal is on a mission to share his knowledge with other architects and the interview on Business of Architecture is a perfect opportunity for him to get his message out. For Segal, the architect as developer model is about more than money: "The architect has the ability, that soul-giving ability to create great cities. The language of our design is purity and simplicity. It’s based on proportion and daylight and special quality. I’m not worried about mansards and faux trim." By creating great buildings Segal hopes to inspire others to revitalize the urban fabric. posts an interview with a successful architect or designer twice a month.
