Barnes Group Inc. Announces Expansion to New Manufacturing Facility in Ogden, Utah
Barnes Aerospace, a business segment of Barnes Group Inc. (NYSE: B), today announced the expansion of its large fabrication operations in Ogden, Utah with the planned opening of a new state-of-the-art, 120,000-square-foot manufacturing facility to produce precision aerospace components for use in a wide range of aircraft engine and airframe applications.
The new facility will accommodate growth in the business, future opportunities and long-term contracts with customers. Construction of the facility, which will nearly double the existing square footage of manufacturing space for the Barnes Aerospace OEM-Ogden operating unit, is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2008. The new facility will be located in the Business Depot Ogden Industrial Park in Ogden, Utah.
Barnes Aerospace produces precision machined and fabricated components and assemblies for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) turbine, airframe and industrial gas turbine builders throughout the world. “We are pleased to be expanding our operations in Ogden,” said Patrick Dempsey, President, Barnes Aerospace. “The new facility will provide the opportunity for Barnes Aerospace to capitalize on the strong growth in our market and achieve improvements in our productivity. The new state-of-the art facility will enhance our ability to meet our customers’ needs by employing the latest techniques in operational excellence.”
Barnes Aerospace chose to expand its operation in Ogden to take advantage of the favorable business environment created by the State of Utah and the City of Ogden, through its aerospace industry clusters, and the area’s highly skilled, dedicated workforce.
“Barnes Aerospace is an impressive company and we couldn’t be more excited to have this expansion take place in Ogden. The new jobs they will offer will continue to drive our very strong economy,” said Mayor Matthew Godfrey.
Barnes Aerospace’s large fabrications business is one of the largest U.S. producers of formed titanium products for OEMs, specializing in the fabrication and assembly of complex airframe and engine components. Barnes Aerospace is a prime source for complex fabrication of high-temperature metals including titanium, hasteloy, inconel, and stainless steel. As a top provider of advanced metal fabrications to the aerospace industry, its activities include complex assembly, welding, vacuum furnace brazing, hot, cold, and superplastic forming, and multi-axis milling, laser, and waterjet cutting technologies.
Barnes Aerospace’s expertise in superplastic forming (SPF), a process recognized as a major factor in the widespread use of titanium sheet metal fabrication in the aerospace industry, offers a unique advantage over conventional fabrication. Increased design freedom and reduced part numbers result in material, tooling, and fabrication cost savings.
Components manufactured by Barnes Aerospace’s OEM-Ogden operating unit are found throughout the airframe, nacelle, and engine and include tube and duct, skins, exhaust nozzles and liners, fairings, and structural support members. Barnes Aerospace also provides jet engine component overhaul and repair services for many of the world’s commercial airlines and military applications.
