Hair Conditioning Spray Recalled Due to Microbial Contamination Concerns

By: WebWire

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about the voluntary recall of a hair conditioning spray used to repair and seal the surface of people's hair while protecting it from high temperatures. The 4.2-ounce spray bottles were distributed nationwide, have a single lot number, and were not available to consumers before April 12th of this year.

According to the recall notice, the product has the potential to be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc). It goes on to state that Bcc poses little medical risk to healthy people but can cause an increased risk for illness or infection in people who have certain health problems, such as weakened immune systems, chronic lung diseases, chronic granulomatous disease, or wound infections. Patients with underlying lung disease (especially cystic fibrosis) might be at increased risk for severe infections with Bcc.

Burkholderia cepacia is the name for a group or “complex” of bacteria that can be found in soil and water according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Bcc can be resistant to common antibiotics making potentially contaminated products used in healthcare environments of particular concern.

Working to help prevent these types of costly product recalls by identifying contamination issues are the dedicated scientists at MPL Laboratories. Their testing experts operate a DEA and FDA registered facility that offers cGMP and ISO 17025 compliant microbiology testing of personal care products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, OTC medicines and other consumer goods. These services are available to manufacturers, importers, distributors, regulatory agencies, and healthcare providers.
