The largest chain of independently owned tire shops in Utah, Burt Brothers Tire and Service began as a single automotive service shop in Bountiful in 1991. Determined to see their business succeed and provide outstanding service to their customers, founders Ron and Wendel Burt poured their hearts and souls into their business with the support of their families. From their example, Partner Jake Burt learned that accomplishing great things requires determination and hard work, both of which were key in overcoming the obstacles to completing his first full Ironman on May 7, 2022, in St. George.

Growing a business from a small Bountiful tire shop to a thriving chain is no small feat. For the Burt Brothers, it was a family affair. Ron and Wendel’s five sons grew up working in the shop sweeping floors, working the registers, changing flats, and rotating tires. While learning the technical aspects of car repair, they also learned the importance of family and treating customers as if they were a part of the Burt family. Their motto, “Doing it Better,” accurately describes the focus of efforts and their secret to success.

Completing a full Ironman had been a goal of Jake’s for a while. He knew it would be a challenge but had no idea how many obstacles he would face. Of the experience, he said, “It really was a journey. I had only ever run a Thanksgiving day 5k race before this,” said Burt. “There were people that doubted me telling me I wasn’t built like an Ironman. But, instead of getting discouraged, it really fueled my fire and made me push through the countless hours of training. When COVID hit, many of my races were canceled or postponed, which only added stress to my mind, body, and family.”

No stranger to overcoming life’s challenges to achieve his goals, Burt persevered, balancing a rigorous training schedule, family responsibilities, and helping his family operate their 14 Utah tire shop locations. In the 24 weeks leading up to the race, he would swim 53 miles, bike 1325 miles, and run 159 miles. After two long years of training, Burt competed in what had become the World Championship Ironman in St. George, Utah, which had been originally slated to take place in Kona, Hawaii.

“The conditions were super tough,” said Burt. “I still get the chills just remembering the feelings I had crossing the finish line and seeing all the spectators cheering and my family there supporting me. I wanted to quit so many times. It forced me to really focus on my “why” and to finish the race. It truly was an amazing experience that I will never forget. Race day for me was really a celebration for the countless hours I had spent training.”

Burt Brothers Tire and Service is family-owned and operated and dedicated to overcoming life’s challenges, to build their business and to support their community. From Layton to Lehi, they are there to help their growing family of customers with their automotive repair and tire needs.
