Desha L. Jackson Selected as Top Lawyer of the Year by IAOTP

Desha L. Jackson, the managing lawyer of Desha Jackson Law Group, was recently selected as Top Lawyer of the Year for 2023 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her extraordinary example of leadership, professionalism, and devotion to the law.
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, other affiliations, and contributions to their communities. Ms. Jackson worked as Counsel at Evelyn Padin's legal firm for two years before starting her own business. Ms. Jackson formerly worked as an associate in Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer's Employment Law Section before joining Ms. Padin's office and formerly worked for the New Jersey Department of Corrections as the Assistant Director of the Equal Employment Division. She helped investigate accusations of discrimination against prison officers and staff, advised on equal employment problems, and taught others about the organization's anti-discrimination policies and practices. Ms. Jackson earned her Equal Employment Certificate from the Rutgers University Center for Management Development. From 2009 through 2016, Ms. Jackson worked for the Department of Prisons again. During her time there, she oversaw both the construction and legal affairs teams in addition to her duties as ADA Coordinator and Assistant Director. Ms. Jackson counseled the Commissioner and other authorities and managers on different legal matters, supervised staff, and developed and delivered training on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ms. Jackson joined the Public Safety Department of the City of Newark in 2016 as a legal consultant. She presided over all disciplinary hearings and helped put their consent decree into effect. During her time in office, she instructed and counseled employees on matters of discipline, as well as on a range of legal issues, including the consent decree.
With over two decades of experience, Ms. Jackson has worked as a consultant in the entertainment and sports industries, advising clients on contract negotiations and other commercial matters. Athletes, dancers, singers, live stage performers, musicians, TV celebrities, DJs, fashion designers, and actors have all been among these clientele. Ms. Jackson is also an FIBA agent. She has been involved in several discrimination cases, severance agreements, and policy disputes between workers and companies. She's acted as a judge on several cases involving disciplinary action. She conducts investigations, including discrimination, ethics, and disciplinary actions in the workplace.
From 2002 until 2007, Ms. Jackson was a Deputy Attorney General (DAG) in the Office of State Police Affairs in the Department of Justice and Public Safety's Office of the Attorney General. The concerns about racial profiling led to the establishment of this agency, which was mandated by the 1999 consent decree between the State of New Jersey and the United States Department of Justice. She spent much of her time as a DAG prosecuting New Jersey State Police officers in administrative hearings. Ms. Jackson oversaw the Newark Police Department's Consent Decree section in 2016.
Before embarking on her professional career, Ms. Jackson attended Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, Florida. While attending Stetson, the faculty selected her to be in Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges due to her involvement and academic achievement.
Jackson is actively engaged in the legal community, earning the title of Young Lawyer of the Year from the New Jersey State Bar Association's (hereafter "NJSBA") Young Lawyers Division in 2002. She participates in several professional organizations, including the American Bar Association (ABA) Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industry and the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) Entertainment, Sports, and Arts Section. Ms. Jackson has served on the Board of Trustees of the NJSBA, as Head of the NJSBA Diversity Committee, and as Vice Chair of the NJSBA Judiciary and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee for South Jersey.
Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Jackson has also received many awards and honors for professional and community involvement. In 2023, Ms. Jackson was on the cover of CIO TIMES and featured in an article entitled "Five Rising Women Leaders Everyone Should Know." She is also being considered for an exclusive interview for TIP Radio. Ms. Jackson was included in The 100 Best Attorneys Magazine for 2020. In 2020, she was also named to the Board of Directors of the Drew University College Alumni Association. Ms. Jackson was also named Professionalism Lawyer of the Year by the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism and the New Jersey Women Lawyer Association in 2007, as well as the Glenn Cunningham Community Service Award by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).In 2005, she earned the Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties' Women of Excellence Award; in 2004, she received the Lakewood NAACP's Special Achievement Award. On February 5, 1998, the Honorable Donald M. Payne placed her in the Congressional Record for professional success, and she earned the Drew University Young Alumnae Achievement Award in 1998. Since 2006 to 2009, she has been chosen for inclusion in the New Jersey Super Lawyers-Rising Stars Editions.
Aside from her illustrious career, Ms. Jackson founded the Center for American Women in Politics' Run Sister Run initiative. Along with the Ready to Run Program, which prepares women for political office, this initiative aims to increase the number of African American women in public life. The DLJ Give to Live Community Foundation, which Ms. Jackson founded and manages, is a charitable organization (Give to Live). The goal of Give to Live is to help those in need by raising money and awareness through fashion, sports, and entertainment events for a wide variety of causes, including but not limited to: sports, athletics, education, religion, poverty, homelessness, socio-economically depressed areas, law enforcement, the arts, people with disabilities, children, young adults, students, women, and the elderly. Her organization established Jersey City Fashion Week in 2012. JCFW is a charitable event that combines the worlds of fashion and entertainment to benefit local organizations. JCFW gives back to the community by donating a portion of their profits. Ms. Jackson was the first woman of color to serve as president of the New Jersey Women's Lawyers Association. She also served as President of the Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey.
She has also acted as a legal advisor to clients in cases brought before the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. Ms. Jackson also serves as the General Counsel for the Central Jersey NOBLE. Jackson instituted policies and initiatives to raise diversity awareness among attorneys and NJSBA officials. Topics like diversity promotion and group acceptance were central to their programming.
