Capitol Physical Therapy Releases New Guide on Text Neck Syndrome
Capitol Physical Therapy is proud to announce the release of a new guide exploring the details of a modern phenomenon called “text neck syndrome.”
Also known as tech neck syndrome, this condition is the result of more widespread use of electronic devices. It’s a type of repetitive strain injury, caused by poor posture while using these devices. Smartphone use is a common cause, but it may also be caused by poor posture while using a computer or while playing video games.
“Think of it this way,” says the clinic’s owner, Dr. Subha Nagasubramanian, “the average human head weighs about ten pounds. Your neck and spine are meant to support that weight. But if you hang your head forward, you’re actually putting up to sixty pounds of force on your neck and spine.”
The guide notes that in the short term, this sort of pressure on the spine can be helpful. In particular, such stretches may be incorporated into yoga, Pilates, and other fitness practices. However, in the long term, it can cause health issues.
In particular, a repetitive strain injury in the neck may lead to poor posture, difficulty focusing, and widespread pain in the back, neck, shoulders, and head.
Text neck syndrome can be particularly problematic for younger children, whose bodies are still developing.
But it’s not all bad news.
The guide notes that text neck syndrome is an easily preventable condition. Holding mobile devices at eye level is acknowledged as the most important habit to avoid text neck syndrome.
“The less you tilt your head forward”, said Dr. Nagasubramanian, “the less strain you place on your neck and spine. Your arm may start to get tired after a while, but this is a small price to pay to avoid chronic pain.”
Taking frequent breaks and exercising the neck and upper back muscles are also useful ways to avoid text neck syndrome. For those who already have text neck syndrome, however, a Washington DC physical therapist can help.
The full guide, titled “Text Neck Syndrome: A Physical Therapist’s Guide to Relief and Prevention” is available for free on the clinic’s website.
