Medical Insurance for the Self-Employed: Brokerage Shows How Entrepreneurs Can Avoid Overpaying

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Entrepreneurs who earn too much to qualify for subsidies can end up paying full price for Marketplace plans. Health Insurance Now, a licensed health insurance brokerage, said it compares private PPO options against those unsubsidized plans to help independent business owners avoid overpaying, and encourages owners to look at both before they commit to a year of premiums.

The company states that private plans are often 30% to 50% less expensive than Marketplace plans with a similar deductible. It cautions that savings vary by state, plan and individual and encourages business owners to request side-by-side quotes before choosing. Health Insurance Now says the comparison matters most for owners whose income puts them outside subsidy eligibility, because they carry the full cost of whichever plan they select.

“Many business owners assume that medical insurance for the self employed means choosing from a short list of Marketplace plans,” said Matthew Sechter, CEO of Health Insurance Now. “There is a wider field, and we help them see all of it. Sometimes the Marketplace plan is still the best fit, and we will say so. But owners should make that call after they have seen the alternatives.”

Health Insurance Now’s agents compare options from more than 25 national carriers, including private PPO networks with nationwide access. The company says about 90% of doctors accept private plans. Enrollment is available year-round, and coverage can often begin within 24 to 48 hours of approval, which the company says gives entrepreneurs flexibility if their circumstances change mid-year.

“Time spent shopping is time not spent running the business,” Sechter said. “A quote in minutes lets an owner decide this week instead of putting it off for another quarter, and a licensed agent is there to explain anything that is not clear.”

Applicants work with licensed agents by phone, and the brokerage handles enrollment paperwork and supports customers after enrollment. Some plans exclude pre-existing conditions, so agents review plan details with each applicant before the application goes in. Entrepreneurs researching medical insurance for the self-employed can request a quote at any time of year.
