Provider Organizations Live with MEDITECH’s Latest Traverse Exchange Advancements Experience Greater Clinician Efficiency
A new consolidated patient summary reduces cognitive load and supports more informed care across an expanding national network.
MEDITECH announced yesterday at its annual leadership summit, MEDITECH LIVE, that customers are now successfully live with the latest workflow advancements to MEDITECH’s Traverse Exchange interoperability solution. The nationwide network now includes a consolidated patient summary, which improves clinician efficiency and reduces cognitive load by providing clinicians with a streamlined view of patient data from multiple sources. By intelligently filtering out redundant information and organizing key data elements in an accessible, searchable format, the solution enables faster, more informed decision-making—all within the native EHR workflow.
Since its initial launch one year ago, the health information exchange network continues to break down data exchange barriers across various sources and is now live in 112 health systems, representing over 500 facilities across 39 U.S. states and territories. Now, MEDITECH is collaborating with its customers to roll out the latest workflow enhancements across its customer base, transforming how providers access their data through the consolidated patient summary.
“For interoperability to gain widespread appeal and adoption, it needs to go beyond simply exchanging data — there needs to be utility around that data so it can be meaningfully applied to patient care,” said MEDITECH Senior Director of Interoperability Market and Product Strategy Mike Cordeiro. “That’s why we are so excited about our latest advancements to the Traverse Exchange network. We’re bringing discrete and meaningful data to the clinicians, within their native workflows, where it can be instantly sorted, filtered, and applied to their decision-making, improving their satisfaction.”
Several customers have recently shared their positive feedback on using the new consolidated patient summary. Emanate Health, a Southern California-based health system serving over 1 million lives in the San Gabriel Valley, has long been at the forefront of interoperability. Emanate joined Traverse Exchange in October 2024, and saw immediate results. They noted that one of the key advantages of Traverse Exchange is its ease of implementation, reporting that no additional FTEs were necessary, and that data is immediately accessible and actionable within existing EHR workflows.
“We serve a diverse and expansive patient population, which requires close collaboration and data sharing with neighboring providers,” said Emanate Health Corporate Director of Enterprise Applications Tito Perez. “With Traverse Exchange, we now have access to discrete, high-quality data embedded directly in our workflows — enhancing care delivery, reducing duplication, and contributing to our overall strategy of growing our services to meet our community needs. The network is even helping us reduce costs, increase revenue, and build patient trust.”
Since going live with Traverse Exchange, Emanate has retrieved over three million documents, with more than 70% coming from health systems using the Epic EHR.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that we are helping providers solve the data fragmentation challenge in healthcare by enabling them to advance their interoperability efforts, regardless of where the data resides,” says MEDITECH Interoperability Product Manager Allison Pallatroni. “By keeping patients at the center, we are helping health systems provide the highest quality care while maintaining their independence.”
Emanate Health providers are already leveraging the workflow advancements to improve data usability and clinical insight.
“As a family medicine clinician, it’s important for me to know where else my patients have been, so being able to view past hospitalizations and ED visits through the consolidated patient summary in Traverse Exchange is helpful,” said Andrea Douglas, PA-C, Emanate Health. “Equally valuable is the ability to quickly review medications, allergies, recent lab and imaging results, and — for pediatric patients in particular — immunizations. As additional organizations begin to universally share data, this tool will become even more valuable."
Frederick Health, a community hospital in Maryland, is situated among many large academic and tertiary institutions in the surrounding area. The organization depends on interoperability to exchange data with its referral partners. Frederick Health CMIO Kristin Conley, DO, FACP, shared that providers at her health system are finding tremendous value in Traverse Exchange, and in particular, the new consolidated patient summary.
“With the launch of Traverse Exchange, we are taking a transformational step forward to ensuring that our providers have access to critical patient information that can sometimes reside outside of our network,” she says.
“As both an Internist and CMIO, I see firsthand how essential it is for providers to have a complete picture of their patients’ health. With the launch of MEDITECH Traverse Exchange, we have seamless access to records and results of patients seen not only across our region, but also nationwide in health systems participating in the QHIN framework. This advancement in interoperability eliminates the barriers of out-of-network care, reduces delays in accessing critical information, and empowers our clinicians to make faster, more informed decisions. Traverse Exchange strengthens our ability to deliver safe, connected, and patient-centered care – no matter where our patients have received treatment.”
Signature Healthcare, located in the Boston suburb of Brockton, Massachusetts, is an independent and integrated health system with strong affiliations with other Boston-based health systems using other vendor EHRs. Traverse Exchange has enabled them to bolster interoperability with their referral partners while maintaining independence.
“The number of patient records we are exchanging through the Traverse Exchange network continues to grow exponentially,” said Signature Health VP and CIO Joe Diver. “The new consolidated patient summary is a major step forward in simplifying the clinician experience while advancing nationwide interoperability. Our ED clinicians, in particular, have found it immensely valuable in quickly locating information on ED patients to make more informed decisions.”
As the new CMS Interoperability Framework continues to evolve, MEDITECH remains committed to helping organizations leverage national interoperability to meet both clinical and business goals. MEDITECH’s interoperability leadership also extends to Canada, where the company is actively working with customers to introduce these new workflow enhancements to the Traverse Exchange Canada network.
“Interoperability has always been a key pillar to MEDITECH’s mission,” added Cordeiro. “We are excited by the continued growth of Traverse Exchange in delivering on the promise of true interoperability, which not only improves patient care but also reduces clinician burden. With Traverse Exchange, we are not just exchanging data, we’re unlocking its full potential.”
