The Lactation Network Appoints Dr. Insiyah Gomberawalla, MD, IBCLC, as Medical Director

Dr. Gomberawalla will Help the Mission-Driven Company Expand Insurance Partnerships and Better Advocate for Broader Coverage of Lactation Care

Just in time for IBCLC Day today, The Lactation Network (TLN), provider of insurance-covered lactation care through the nation’s largest network of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Insiyah Gomberawalla, MD, IBCLC, as its first Medical Director. This strategic addition to TLN’s leadership team underscores the company’s commitment to integrating expert clinical guidance, strengthening its partnerships with insurance providers and ensuring every family receives the highest standard of lactation support through its partner IBCLCs, where Dr. Gomberawalla began her journey.

“As TLN continues to grow and expand access to lactation support, having a dedicated Medical Director is a critical step in ensuring seamless collaboration with insurance providers and advancing the standard of care for families nationwide,” said McKenzie Closen, Chief Operating Officer of TLN. “With Dr. Gomberawalla on board, we are strengthening our ability to advocate for lactation consultants, improve patient outcomes and shape the future of lactation support, and healthcare in general.”

Dr. Insiyah Gomberawalla is a board-certified pediatrician trained at Lurie Children’s Hospital, with a passion for maternal and infant health. After discovering gaps in her own lactation knowledge firsthand upon the birth of her own children, she pursued her IBCLC certification to better assist new parents. Initially integrating lactation care into her pediatric practice, she soon recognized the overwhelming demand and transitioned to full-time fourth-trimester care and lactation support. Now, in her role with TLN, she will serve as a subject matter expert, collaborating with health plans to advocate for evidence-based lactation care, ensure continuity of care and reinforce TLN’s commitment to clinical best practices.

The appointment also comes at a critical time in the U.S. maternal health crisis, where rising postpartum mortality rates, particularly among marginalized communities, underscore the urgent need for comprehensive, evidence-based postpartum care. Studies show that lack of lactation support contributes to postpartum complications, including higher rates of infection, mental health struggles and disparities in infant nutrition. As Medical Director, Dr. Gomberawalla will play a key role in advocating for broader insurance coverage of lactation services as a lifesaving intervention in maternal and infant health.

“Lactation support is so much more than helping babies latch to the breast, it’s essential healthcare and a critical part of maternal and infant welfare, yet too many families face unnecessary barriers to accessing expert lactation care,” said Dr. Gomberawalla. “I’m thrilled to join TLN at this pivotal moment to help bridge the gap between healthcare providers like myself, insurers, and families. This is one way we can improve health outcomes and ensure more parents receive the support they need during the challenging postpartum period.”

TLN remains committed to breaking down barriers by making expert lactation care accessible through insurance. The addition of a Medical Director reinforces this mission, ensuring that TLN’s network of IBCLCs receives the clinical and operational support needed to serve families effectively.
