City of Hope Recognized for the Fourth Consecutive Year as a ‘Top Hospital and Health System’ for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Fair360 ranked the national cancer organization No. 2, maintaining its position from 2023

City of Hope, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, has once again been recognized by Fair360 (formerly DiversityInc) as one of the “Top Hospitals and Health Systems” in the country for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), ranking second on a list of 20 reputable health care organizations for the second year in a row. As the top National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, City of Hope is holding strong in the specialty ranking’s top 10 for the fourth consecutive year.

The Fair360 survey evaluates companies based on six key areas of workplace fairness, providing a trusted measure of transparency, equitable outcomes for employees and the effectiveness of fairness strategies and practices. The “Top Hospitals and Health Systems” list is industry-specific and based on a data-driven evaluation.

“This achievement underscores our institutional commitment to inclusion, collaboration and health equity, which helps us provide compassionate and culturally competent care that meets the needs of all communities. It also cultivates an inclusive environment where our patients and employees feel valued and heard,” said Angela L. Talton, senior vice president and system chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer.

The consecutive ranking is particularly meaningful as inclusivity and health equity are in the DNA of City of Hope, which is constantly striving to benefit its communities by decreasing health disparities in multiple ways. Efforts include co-authoring systemwide DEI training with minority business enterprise training vendors, organizing thoughtful community collaborations and addressing root causes of barriers to good health.

Internally, diversity, equity and inclusion remain at the heart of City of Hope’s initiatives and communications. Staff embarked on a “Situational Inclusivity Learning Journey,” complete with interactive modules and online classes to lay the groundwork for an inclusive culture based upon changing actions and behaviors to be more consciously inclusive. Notably, City of Hope’s holistic approach to recruitment and hiring also earned recognition as one of the “Top Companies for Talent Acquisition for Women of Color” by Fair360, a distinction earned through rigorous evaluation of new hire metrics, human capital management, inclusive onboarding practices, diverse candidate slate requirements and comprehensive employee benefits.

City of Hope’s national system of provider and research entities now serves approximately 144,000 patients each year, with more than 12,000 team members, 550 physicians and more than 1,000 scientists and researchers across a network of locations in California, Arizona, Illinois and Georgia.
