University of Phoenix Hosts Second Educational Equity Webinar Featuring Dr. Kimberly Nao, Educator and Antiracism Expert

Nao leads the discussion focused on intersectional approaches to structural change

University of Phoenix is holding the newest webinar in its Educational Equity Webinar Series, titled “Beyond the Talk: Intersectional Approaches to Antiracist Structural Change,” on Feb. 16, 2023, at 11:00am MST. The event is part of a public series intended for educators, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) practitioners, higher education leaders and administrators, employers, nonprofit organizations, government affiliates, and University of Phoenix faculty, staff, students, and alumni across the globe.

Dr. Kimberly Nao, Fritz Burns Endowed Chair Associate Professor of Education at Mount Saint Mary's University and University Diversity Fellow, will lead the discussion on intersectional approaches to antiracist structural change. Building on themes and concepts presented in January’s Educational Equity webinar, this presentation seeks to move beyond self-reflection and will focus on antiracist structural change in the workplace. Participants can expect an informative hour that will:

  • Dive deeper into understanding the distinctions between antiracism and diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Learn about an appreciative inquiry process for moving organizations forward with structural and cultural change
  • Utilize an intersectional lens as a catalyst for change

"Dr. Nao’s expertise in facilitating antiracist change and social transformation enhances the work we do in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging," states Tondra Richardson, MBA, director of Student Diversity & Inclusion at University of Phoenix, and a host of the series. “We are grateful for the opportunity to bring Dr. Nao back for a second Educational Equity Webinar and look forward to diving deeper into the topics of antiracism and structural change.”

Nao has worked extensively on diversity and equity issues with a particular emphasis on the intersection of race and gender and facilitates discussions on these issues with organizations throughout the Los Angeles area. She has trained K-12 teachers, Santa Monica Police Department police officers, community college faculty and staff, health care workers, and parents of K-12 students on issues related to gender, sexuality, and toxic masculinity with the goal of breaking down gender norms that can lead to rigid gender roles, discrimination, and violence. As a yoga and mindfulness teacher, Nao believes that self-awareness and compassion for others leads to social transformation.

The discussion will be hosted by Tondra Richardson, MBA, director of Student Diversity & Inclusion, and Saray Lopez, MBA, director, Student Diversity & Inclusion, both with the Office of Educational Equity (OEE) at University of Phoenix. The Educational Equity Webinar Series is part of a series of events with which the OEE engages aiming to foster cultural awareness, thought leadership and community alliances to promote and sustain educational equity and diversity initiatives. The OEE supports students and faculty year-round with programs like the Inclusive Leadership Summit and an internal offering for staff and faculty, The Inclusive Café.
