Worcester-Based Tutor Speaks Out About Student Mental Health Crisis in Wake of COVID
A Worcester-based tutor is speaking out about the growing mental health crisis facing school-age children — and how one-to-one support outside the classroom is becoming more vital than ever.
Steven Britton, an experienced maths tutor and published academic author, has worked with young people for over 22 years and says the impact of the pandemic on student wellbeing is still being deeply felt. Through his nationwide online service, Top Grade Tutoring, Steven is helping students across the UK not only catch up academically, but also regain confidence, structure, and emotional stability after years of disruption.
“COVID-19 didn’t just close classrooms — it dismantled routines, social development, and students’ belief in themselves,” he explains. “Many of the students I now teach are still battling anxiety, school refusal, low mood, and the effects of prolonged isolation.”
During the pandemic, Steven continued tutoring children who had fallen behind or disengaged from school entirely, offering calm, consistent support when mainstream education struggled to meet their emotional needs. Today, he continues that work with students dealing with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other challenges made worse by the lockdowns.
“My approach is rooted in empathy,” Steven says. “I’ve experienced mental health struggles myself, so I understand how important it is for students to feel seen, heard, and safe in their learning environment.”
Offering one-to-one maths tuition to students aged 11 to 16, Steven works remotely with learners nationwide. Many of them have additional needs or a history of mental health challenges that make traditional classroom learning difficult. Several have seen dramatic improvements in both their academic performance and personal confidence after working with him — some jumping two whole GCSE grades.
“Students today are under more pressure than ever, yet they’re still recovering from one of the most disruptive periods in modern education,” he adds. “We need to move beyond test scores and start putting wellbeing first.”
Steven’s work has gained recognition beyond tutoring. As a published academic author, he has produced revision materials and DVDs that have been used in schools across the UK, New Zealand, and India, with thousands of copies sold online.
Now based in Worcester, Steven is passionate about raising awareness around mental health in education and showing that, with the right support, every child can succeed — no matter what they've been through.
“Academic success starts with emotional safety,” he says. “When students feel supported, they start to believe in themselves again — and that’s when real progress happens.”
